COSTA RICA IS A SMALL COUNTRY

Mainland: 51,100 square kilometers located between 8 ° and 11 ° N latitude and 82 ° and 85 ° W longitude.
Population: close to 4 million.
Nicaragua is bordered to the north, the south by Panama, east by the Caribbean Sea with a coastline of 212 kms. and west by the Pacific Ocean with a coastline of 1 254 km. Cocos Island (24 km2) in the Pacific as part of its territory.
With a width of 120 km territorial half the country is divided into two areas: the Atlantic slope, humid and rainy, without water deficit throughout the year and the Pacific Ocean side, drier, with a marked decrease in the flow low water.
It is located in the geographical area called the Neotropical.
Its area is 0.03 of the planet's surface but has 5% of global biodiversity.
Costa Rica is considered one of the 20 most biodiverse countries in the world Its geographical position, its two coasts and its mountainous system, which provides numerous and varied microclimates, are some reasons that explain this natural wealth, both in species and ecosystems .
Costa Rica is home to a wide variety of wildlife displayed in: some 13,000 plants. species, 2,000 species of butterflies and 4,500 species nocturnal, amphibians, 163 species, 220 species reptiles, fish, 1,600 species of fresh and salt water and some 850 species of birds.

ABOUT SAN CARLOS, THE NORTH ORCHARD AREA, WHERE IS SEATED Biological Reserve ASSISI FOUNDATION PROJECT

The region is part of the floodplains of the Atlantic and its terrain is generally flat, with alluvial fill product base material of volcanic origin. The topographic profile is characterized by hills up to 382 m. Asl terraces with altitudes between 50 and 100 m. Asl and floodplains of land, some wetlands.
In general the terrain is hilly with high sides, as in the hills Congo, Banana and Arenal, Tenorio, Miravalles and Rincon de la Vieja, to the lower flat and easily flooded and swamp.
The rivers flowing to the west are the Peñas Blancas, San Lorenzo, La Tigra, Fortuna and javillo, giving rise to the great river San Carlos.
Predominant vegetation in the area consists of pastures, forests, reforestation, chaparral, tacotales, manuals and perennial crops.
Climatological factors: The average temperature is: San Carlos 26 º C, and in volcanic areas 20 º C. The relative humidity is 80-90% and a solar radiation from 3 to 5 hours daily.
Precipitation: The North Huetar is in the torrid zone, therefore, has a tropical climate (dry and rainy). Winter is from May to January or February and the dry season from March to May, with some sporadic rainfall caused by cold fronts from the north. The variable precipitation on average between 2000 mm / year in the plains to 5000 mm / year in the volcanic massifs.
